Mixed fortunes as Fisher wins again at Combe

In practice for the Formula Ford event, Championship leader, Josh Fisher in the Hudson-Evans' Van Diemen JL14 once again set the pace to take pole position. Andrew Higginbottom in the team's Van Diemen RF88 was almost as spectacular, getting into the 1m 12s bracket to qualify 9th and fastest in Class C with Steve Bracegirdle a couple of places further back in his Van Diemen RF89. However, during practice Andrew's water pump belt failed, the engine overheated, destroying itself and Andrew went off removing a couple of corners! For the race the team brought out the ex Pete Diccox RF89 for Andrew to use.

The opening lap saw an incident involving another Championship contender which led to a couple of subsequent protests. In the restarted race Josh dropped to third on the opening lap but a couple of moves saw him take the lead (and fastest lap) by lap 3 which he held until Lap 8 when the race finished. Steve got in front of Andrew at the start and the pair ran close together for the entire race with Steve taking the class win and Andrew the fastest Class C lap.

Provisionally, Josh holds an 8 point lead in the Championship while Andrew and Steve continue to battle for the Class C title.

On the following day Steve was out in his Mini Cooper but the team's week-end of problems continued when his engine let go leaving a hole in the block!

Many thanks to Mike Stokes of Trackside Images for his fine photos.
